Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is a surgical speciality dealing with diseases and conditions of the face, mouth and jaw, as well as structures related to those areas such as the salivary glands and the neck.
It is unique in that it requires a dual qualification in both medicine and dentistry. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons treat conditions requiring expertise in both these fields, such as head and neck cancer, facial disproportion, salivary gland disease, jaw joint disorders and all conditions affecting the mouth and jaws.
The L&D has six oral and maxillofacial surgeons working within a network covering Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and part of Buckinghamshire. The L&D is the centre for Oral and maxillofacial surgery covering in-patients and emergencies for Bedford Hospital, Milton Keynes Hospital and the Lister and QEII Hospital, Welwyn. All five surgeons have sub speciality interests as well as carrying out all general oral and maxillofacial work, and all work at the L&D.
