The Trust Boards of Luton & Dunstable University Hospital and Bedford Hospital are exploring plans to merge and form one NHS Trust.
As a single NHS Trust, both hospitals will retain their identity and individual hospital names. This will bring many benefits for patients including improved continuity of care. A&E, maternity and paediatrics services will remain on both sites, and clinical services at both hospitals will work together to improve health care services for all patients across Bedfordshire and beyond.
On 19th December 2017 both Trust Boards unanimously approved the Full Business Case (FBC) for the proposed merger – you can view the public summary here. Since that time, discussions have been ongoing with national regulators about the revenue and capital requirements that will underpin our ability to realise the benefits of the merger proposal. Both Trusts have submitted capital bids that will support their plans to merger and expect to find out whether these have been successful in the Autumn. Subject to funding being available, the Trusts plan to merge and create a single NHS Foundation Trust no later than 1st April 2019.
In the meantime, the partnership approach established between Bedford and L&D Hospital continues and real progress has been made regarding future ways of working together. You can read more here.
