Cardiology

Referral Process

Referrals are accepted via E-RS.

ICE referrals are required for the following services:

  • Open Access Echo 
  • Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic 
  • Suspected Heart Failure Clinic

Clinicians are also happy to give advice and guidance via the E-RS advice and Guidance function and a rota is in place to facilitate this process.

Cardiology is the medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the heart including Ischaemic Heart Disease, Arrhythmia, Structural and Valve Disease and Hypertension.

The Cardiology Directorate includes:

  • Cardiology Outpatients 
  • Cardiology Diagnostics 
  • Cardiac Centre 
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation 
  • Coronary Care Unit (CCU)

Clinics

All outpatient Cardiology clinics are for adults only. 

General Cardiology Clinics
These consist of both new patient and follow up clinic slots and are run by all of the Cardiology Consultant team. General Cardiology outpatient clinics run on Monday afternoon, Tuesday morning and afternoon, Wednesday afternoon, Thursday morning and afternoon and Friday morning.

Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic 
This service is led by our Clinical Nurse Specialist with support from both a Consultant Cardiologist and Specialty Doctor in Cardiology. Clinics run Monday-Friday during the morning. 

Rapid Access Suspected Heart Failure Clinic 
This service is led by our Clinical Nurse Specialist and Consultant Cardiologist with a special interest in Heart Failure. Two clinics are run per week; Tuesday and Wednesday pm. 

Specialist Arrhythmia Clinic 
The arrhythmia and cardioversion service is led by our Arrhythmia Pharmacy Practitioner. Clinics are held alongside local Consultant Cardiologists on Monday and Wednesday afternoon. A joint clinic with a visiting Consultant from Harefield Hospital is held on a Thursday afternoon. A cardioversion list is held weekly on a Tuesday. 

Cardiac Rehabilitation 
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Team hold a once weekly clinic on a Wednesday. Exercise and education sessions are held on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, are aimed at a mixture of abilities and are provided both within the Trust and in a Community setting.

Procedures Provided

The Cardiology Directorate offers a very comprehensive diagnostic and treatment service.

Cardiology Outpatients
A number of clinics are run by the Cardiology team. See below for more details. 

Cardiology Diagnostics 
Within the diagnostic department the following investigations are performed:

  • Twelve lead ECG 
  • ECG recording over 1-7 days
  • Cardiac event recording 
  • Transthoracic echocardiogram 
  • Specialist echocardiogram (including stress echo and transoesphageal echo)
  • Exercise testing 
  • Tilt testing 
  • 24 hour blood pressure monitoring

The diagnostic department is open 365 days per year, providing echocardiography and ECG monitoring over a seven day service, both elective and non-elective. The department is extremely responsive to urgent requests.

Within the Trust the following cardiac investigations are performed:

  • CT coronary angiography 
  • Myocardial perfusion scanning 

Cardiac Centre 
The Cardiac Centre consists of a 9 bedded day ward and a fully equipped cath lab. Within the Cardiac Centre the following services are provided both elective and non-elective:

  • Diagnostic coronary angiography 
  • Coronary angioplasty (stents)
  • Cardiac pacing and monitoring service 
  • DC Cardioversion 

Cardiac Rehabilitation 
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Team consists of a range of healthcare professionals including nurses, a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, dietitian and therapy assistants. The team can provide an individualised programme of exercise an education following a cardiac event, treatment or diagnosis. The aim of cardiac rehabilitation is to promote recovery and reduce further risk of heart disease. 

Coronary Care Unit (CCU)
This is a 13 bedded ward with 6 beds for patients who have acute cardiac complications. There are also an additional 22 Cardiology beds on Ward 16.
