Haematology and Blood Transfusion (GP information)

Introduction

Haematology and Blood Transfusion, located in the Pathology block of the hospital, offers a high-quality analytical service to clinicians based at the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital and in the surrounding area. 9.00 to 17.30 – Outside these hours, for urgent requests, please contact the Out of hours BMS on bleep 553.

Referral Process

GP referral by E-RS only.

GP guidance/advice by telephone or letter faxed to Haematology Secretary.

Procedures Provided

The department provides its users with a huge range of tests. The most common include:

  • Full Blood Counts (FBC)
  • Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)
  • Sickle screening
  • Glandular Fever screening
  • Malarial parasite screening
  • Blood Film reviews
  • Routine clotting screens
  • INR (warfarin monitoring)
  • APTT ratios (heparin monitoring)
  • Haemostatic investigations e.g. thrombophilia screens, factor assays. (by arrangement)
  • Haemoglobin electrophoresis
  • Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) assays
  • Special Haematology assays e.g pyruvate kinase, oxygen dissocation assays (by arrangement)
  • Cytogenetic investigations of haematological abnormalities including leukaemia and lymphoma (by arrangement)
  • Flow cytometry and cytochemisty for the identification of haematological abnormalities including leukaemia and lymphoma (by arrangement)
  • Lymphocyte subset counts (CD4, CD8 counts) (by arrangement)
  • Blood grouping, antibody screening and cross-matching of blood
