Neurophysiology

Neurophysiological tests are used in diagnosing a wide range of neurological conditions. In some instances they are the only special tests needed, but they may be combined with others such as Imaging to solve particular problems. All of the Neurophysiological tests record very small electrical signals from the nerves and muscles.

Procedures Provided

Video/EEG (Electroencephalogram) – This records the electrical activity from different parts of the brain and converts the information into a tracing called an electroencephalogram (EEG). As well as routine video EEGs, we do sleep deprived EEG, Prolonged EEG recordings and ad hoc EEGs after discussion. These tests are carried out by Specialist / Highly Specialist Clinical Physiologists.

EP (Evoked Potentials) – Records the responses to different types of stimulus (light, sound and touch) to test the function of the central nervous system (VEP, SEP, SSEP). These tests are carried out by Specialist / Highly Specialist Clinical Physiologists.

NCS (Nerve Conduction Studies) and EMG (Electromyography) – This tests the function of nerves and muscles by recording the activity in affected areas, using small stimulating electrodes or recording needle electrodes. These tests are carried out by a Consultant in Clinical Neurophysiology. Highly Specialist Clinical Physiologists also carry out Nerve Conduction Studies.
