It is advisable to register for an Athens password when you are attached to the NHS computer network, because the Athens system can recognise the NHS computer servers and register you straight away.

You can register from a non-NHSnet computer, i.e. at home, but you may have to wait up to 10- 15 days for your credentials to be verified. However, once you have your Athens password you can use it from your home computer.
