Interlibrary Loan

FAQs

When should I use this service?
For articles, books and other items NOT held in the library and for those articles that you are not able to access yourself.

What can I request?
Books, journal articles, conference papers, multimedia, etc but it must be related to your research, teaching or studies.

What is the cost?
Article requests that incur a charge, for example from The British Library or BMA are considered according to the requester. For example, if the request is from someone undertaking a course associated with a university, then we ask the requester to use the university library document supply system. Other requests that incur charges are considered individually according to need.Note that each British Library request costs the library £8.50.

How much info should I provide?
Provide as much information as possible.

How long does it take?
Depends on the item being requested and the source of supply. The time taken to supply an item depends on many variables including the accuracy and fullness of the details you supply, and the time spent in transit from the supplier. All requests are processed as quickly as possible and suppliers are chosen for their reliability and speedy supply. Journal articles are usually supplied within a couple of days.

How will I receive items?
Copies of articles will be made available electronically so you will usually be notified by email and receive the document as an attachment.

You will usually be notified by email when books and other items are ready for collection. Please let us know if you prefer an alternative method of communication.

Can I obtain articles with an NHS Athens account?
Within the healthcare databases, you will come across full text links. If the article is not available in full text, you may be presented with a list of libraries that hold the journal. Contact us directly for supply.

Document Supply Policy

  • Each article request sent to the library is investigated. Articles that are freely downloaded or requested (from a regional source) are sent on to the requester (assuming NHS personnel).
  • Article requests that incur a charge, for example from The British Library or BMA are considered according to the requester. For example, if the request is from someone undertaking a course associated with a university, then we ask the requester to use the university library document supply system. Other requests that incur charges are considered individually according to need.
  • We do not limit the number of requests that we source at any one time. We aim to assist with document supply as efficiently and effectively as possible in order to assist staff with their assignments or research
