Pressures at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital

2nd January 2018

The hospital has been under extreme pressure over the New Year bank holiday weekend.  The Emergency Department was very busy and we have seen an unprecedented number of acute medical admissions.

Staff have been fantastic at responding to the challenge and have ensured that the L&D continued to function in a safe and effective way. We are grateful for the support from Community and Social Care colleagues.

Messages were put out on social media on New Year’s eve and we would like to thank everyone who shared them on our behalf and helped spread the message about only attending the Emergency Department if it is a real emergency.

It is likely to remain busy for the next few days. We would strongly encourage people with non life-threatening illness to consider speaking to their GP, a pharmacist or calling NHS 111 first to determine what the most appropriate type of care is and avoid attending the Emergency Department unless they have been referred.
