Public Consultation – proposed redevelopment of the L&D

At the Luton and Dunstable NHS Foundation Trust we are continuing to progress with our site redevelopment plans, and are proposing a £150million overhaul of the hospital site, to provide state of the art acute care facilities. A new building will be erected housing a new delivery suite and midwifery led birthing centre; a neonatal unit offering parent accommodation; a new critical care floor; a theatre reception and theatre floor. Additionally, the Emergency Department which has met unprecedented demand over recent years will undergo a significant expansion, and most wards or departments will receive an upgrade/redecoration to support excellent patient care and experience.

The hospital will be brought together by a central, covered boulevard, offering retail and catering facilities for patients, visitors and staff. A central plaza will run off of the boulevard to allow some landscaped space to support patient and visitor wellbeing.

In addition to the main site work, a number of smaller projects are being developed, including the creation of an orthopaedic centre. The centre which will be located off-site will include the Trusts fracture clinic, orthopaedic clinics, some musculoskeletal services and associated imaging so that patients on an orthopaedic pathway can receive the majority of their care in one place. Further communications will be shared with patients as this initiative progresses.

The redevelopment continues to move at speed and the hospital are now in a position to share these plans with members of the public. As such, a public consultation has been organised from Monday 22nd June to Saturday 27th June, both in Luton and in Dunstable. This is an opportunity for residents in the area to find out more about the hospital’s redevelopment and how it will benefit the local community. It is also an opportunity for residents to feed back their experiences so that these can be incorporated into the detailed design.
