Before surgeryIn this section

Before surgery

Before your surgery you will either meet in a group session or during a clinic, depending on the surgery you are having.

At this meeting you will be provided with:

  • An explanation of your impending surgery and managing your expectations
  • Information on the importance of playing an active role in your own recovery with the support of health care professionals
  • Information on fitness for your surgery including diet, smoking, cessation, alcohol reduction, dental, infections, exercise and more
  • Practical information to help your recovery including planning for going home before you come in

Orthopaedics – Primary Hip and Knee Replacement

We aim to invite all patients waiting for primary Knee and Hip replacements to pre-operative “joint replacement school” which is a one hour and 15 minute session to talk about your role on the Enhanced Recovery Programme and what you can do to help yourself both pre and post-surgery. This includes getting up and out of bed on the day of surgery to aid pain management and encourage blood flow, reducing the risk of post-operative complications.  This session is run by the Enhanced Recovery team and enables you to ask any questions you may have.  An information pack will be provided to you at this appointment and relevant contact numbers are reiterated.

Nutricia Pre-Op carbohydrate drinks will be given out either at your pre-assessment appointment or at this session. We cannot give these drinks to patients with Type 1 and Type 2 (on medications) Diabetes – other advice will therefore be given at this appointment as to how you can hydrate yourself immediately prior to your surgery.

Colorectal – Bowel and Rectal resections

The Enhanced Recovery team aim to see all patients coming in for planned bowel and rectal resections in a one stop clinic (held on Tuesday mornings).  At this appointment you will be seen by the following people:

  • Enhanced Recovery Nurse
  • Pharmacist
  • Pre-assessment Nurse
  • Health Care Assistant

At the appointment the Enhanced Recovery Nurse will discuss ‘pre-optimisation’ (getting your body in the best condition and how to practically prepare for your surgery). Research says the fitter someone is leading up to surgery can have a positive impact on your overall recovery; this is a big part of your surgical journey.  We will also talk to you about what you can do both pre and post-surgery to aid your own recovery.  The bigger part you play the better the result!

You will be provided with an ERAS information pack at this appointment, which we kindly ask you to read and bring into hospital with you, the information provided will help to guide your recovery whilst in hospital.
